The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is an Indian government-sponsored program with the objective of reducing maternal and infant mortality rates by encouraging pregnant women to opt for institutional delivery. Under this initiative, eligible pregnant women are granted financial support when they give birth at a government-approved or accredited private health facility, regardless of their maternal age or number of previous childbirths.
To ensure comprehensive coverage of the expenses associated with childbirth, it is of paramount importance that the financial assistance is distributed directly within the healthcare facility. This approach guarantees that the intended beneficiaries receive the full amount without any complications. In instances where women opt for public healthcare facilities for their delivery, the entire cash entitlement should be disbursed to them in a single payment directly at the healthcare institution where they are receiving the services.
For pregnant women who choose to avail antenatal care from accredited private institutions and require financial support for a minimum of three antenatal care visits, which include Tetanus Toxoid (TT) injections, a substantial proportion of the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) cash assistance should be allocated to them. Specifically, at least three-fourths (3/4) of the total cash assistance should be provided to the beneficiary, especially at the time of delivery.
This approach ensures that pregnant women accessing antenatal care through private healthcare facilities also receive a significant portion of the financial assistance, thus contributing to the overarching goal of reducing financial barriers and promoting safe maternal and newborn health practices. By disbursing the assistance directly within the healthcare system, the scheme aims to streamline the process and ensure that the financial aid effectively supports women during their childbirth journey, regardless of the type of healthcare facility they choose for their antenatal care and delivery.
